Gavin is off of school this week

He seems to still be progressing well with his speech.  When he came home today he was talking to me.  Usually he only says a few sentences, but today he addressed me.  He said "Daddy, I want something to drink please" and a few other requests directed at me.  It was cool.

We’re still battling with the toilet training.  He is in underwear and typically holds it all day until nap time when he gets a diaper or bedtime when he gets a diaper, or he pees his underwear/pants without going to the potty.  Its definitely a challenge as a father of an autistic boy to not discipline him when he’s peed ALL over the carpet in the living room.

I guess Jenny McCarthy had to cancel

I went to The Larry King Live page today and it lists Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carey coming soon.  Maybe they wanted to do Larry King Live together after Thanksgiving or something?  Stay tuned and I’ll post something when I know

Got Autism? – PETA IS CRUEL, UNETHICAL & DISGUSTING.

Autism No Comments »

As a parent of a child with Autism, this DISGUSTS ME and PISSES ME OFF!!!

Got Autism? PETA IS CRUEL, UNETHICAL & DISGUSTING.

Recently, the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a new ad campaign entitled, "Got Autism?", misleadingly implying that the consumption of milk is associated with the cause of the autism spectrum. PETA is misinforming the public about autism and thus joining a long line of unscrupulous groups that have sought to try and spread fear about autism as a means of pushing their particular agendas.

Attempts such as these treat individuals with disabilities as pawns in the efforts of other constituencies. By refusing to acknowledge the right of the autistic community to be referred to with respect instead of as the focus of public hysteria, PETA contributes to a state of affairs which marginalizes the disability community.

People with disabilities, our families and our supporters deserve better than the exploitation and fear-mongering that comes about when disability is used as a means of scaring the general populace. For millions across the globe, the answer to PETA’s "Got Autism?" question is an unequivocal yes. That should not spell the end of our lives or prevent us from being fully included throughout society. By exploiting us, PETA becomes a culprit in the social forces that marginalize people with disabilities and lead to the discrimination and prejudice that truly disable us.

Let PETA know how you feel about its choice to exploit autistic people by writing to them at info@peta.org or call them at 757-622-7382 and dial 0. In addition, we encourage you to express your support for these ads’ swift withdrawal by signing this online petition.

Walk Now for Autism

What's Up No Comments »

walklogo Walk Now for AutismIt was freezing and cold, but Gavin, Mommy (Kris) and Daddy (Dave) all walked in the 2008 Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism Event.  This was our first year, and we were testing the waters so we didn’t meet our fundraising goal, but we had a great time.  It was nice being around other people that actually understood what it was like to have an autistic child.  Gavin had a tough time transitioning from some of the play areas inside to other play areas and eventually the walk.  He threw a tantrum and no one looked once, let alone twice to see what was going on.  Thats just part of life with an autistic child.

They’re still taking donations until December 31st, 2008, so if you feel so inclined visit:
